Local residents protested the proposal of a rent-subsidized high-rise in a stable multi-racial (including Italian-Americans, Hispanics and Blacks) neighborhood in Newark. Since I grew up there and was then a newspaper reporter, I present tapes and never-before-heard information, plus insights from local residents, many of whom were Italian immigrants, as was my family.
